Itinerary

Day one and day two:
Our tour departs either from Johannesburg, the Kruger National Park or from Durban. The Battlefields Route as it is known, starts at Estcourt in the south and winds north through Colenso and Ladysmith to Newcastle and Volksrust and eastwards to Utrecht, Glencoe, Dundee, Nqutu, Paulpietersburg, Vryheid and Ulundi. In days gone by this land was the scene of momentous battles between Boer, British and Zulu forces. These battles shaped South African history. The unique concentration of historic sites has become popular with tourists from far and wide who come to explore the period buildings, museums and monuments, and see for themselves the valleys and hills where the great battles were fought. We stay at Shakaland. You'll sleep in the cosy cocoon of an authentic beehive hut, a unique experience of traditional Zulu tribal life, with all the comforts of a hotel. Experience the essence of Africa, pulsating tribal rhythms, assegai wielding warriors and the mysterious rituals of the traditional healer.
Day three:
Today we visit the province's largest game park situated in typical bush-veld country in northern Zululand. It incorporates two of Africa's oldest parks, Hluhluwe and Umfolozi, both founded in 1895. Hluhluwe is well known for the abundance black and white rhino in the area.
Day four and five:
Our home base is close to the crystal-clear water of Sodwana Bay or near Kosi Bay. In the north the five freshwater Kosi lakes thread their way between the luminous green of the fever trees and the dark, in penetrable coastal forest. Further south lays Lake Sibaya, the largest freshwater lake in South Africa. Further south still is the spectacular St Lucia lake system and estuary, separated from the sea by high sand dunes covered in coastal forest. Inland are the intricate Pongola and Mkuzi Rivers which meander through pans and lakes, across forested flood plains teeming with wildlife. The coast is a paradise of clear, warm water and offshore coral reefs.
